My friend Jim had already decided that he didn’t want to keep his Squirtman.com domain name anymore, so I decided to look and see if it would be worth much if I decided to sell it rather than just let it expire. (I bought it originally many years ago and have been keeping it active since then, along with my own domain.) Well, according to the estimation page on their site – which could very well be blowing smoke up my ass – they valued the URL at a little over $1200.
But it just so happens that Jim could really use the extra money right now, so I went ahead and listed it for sale at $999. I really have no idea what I’m doing, but it looks like GoDaddy makes it simple – where once the purchase is completed, it’ll just automagically transfer over to the purchaser from my account. I think they take a percentage cut, which will knock some off the top, but once I take a little bit to cover any taxes I might have to pay at the end of the year, along with a little bit for the fees I’ve paid since buying the domain, I’m hoping that it’ll sell and I can end up giving Jim at least $600 or so.
It’ll be sad to see it go… definitely an end of an era, with Squirtman.com no longer being redirected to something related to Jim, but if it ends up helping him out financially after all of these years of having it, that would be awesome. It’s been forever since I mucked together an actual website for him and his URL, and it’s only been forwarding to his Facebook profile for the past couple of years – and he’s actually got his FB deactivated temporarily at the moment. So yeah, wish us luck.
Oh, they said Rubbertoe.com is worth a bit less than $1100. Interesting.
(I really should have thought of a bunch of clever domains way back when and bought them all up… never considered that even mediocre sounding URLs could be a decent investment. We’ll have to wait and see if it actually sells though.)
