Slow-Mo Sparkle

Finally went ahead and tried a couple of these this afternoon, since I’ve been threatening to do it for like five years now. The 240fps / 720p that the iPhone 11 shoots at is okay, but it’s still not quite fast enough to get really amazing footage. Plus, shooting at such a high speed requires a bunch of light, so it amps the ISO up to ridiculous levels…

I’m probably gonna try it again on a sunny day, or even better, when it’s sunny and there’s a bunch of snow on the ground. I don’t think I can manually control the ISO in this mode, so that’s about the only thing I can think of to possibly improve the image quality. Still kinda neat despite being pretty grainy, I suppose.

Mapping Millersport

It took until well into the afternoon yesterday, but I finally talked myself into going on a drive to Millersport. And I think I already mentioned the battery in this camera… but yeah, between it being permanently installed and not swappable, and then the cold blowing across it as I recorded, I was only able to capture three of the big chunks that I wanted before the battery went dead.

(The three videos have been uploaded and will publish to their playlist Thur, Fri, & Sat at 5pm.)

I got Leibs Island, everything on the north side of town, and then all of the numbered streets between Canal and Chautauqua. I mean, it was close to thirty minutes worth of video, so I suppose that’s not bad… but it would sure be nice to be able to just swap out a battery and keep going, especially considering the drive to get there and back. (Today will be nice, but I’m out of juice too… ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ Not sure when I’ll make the second trip.)

I’ll take the USB cable next time, just in case I can’t finish up on one charge. I think the only reason I was able to convince myself to go and do it yesterday was because I also needed to top up on pop and groceries. It’s Election Day today, which should be relatively calm, but who’s to say how things are going to be over the next week or two as things are decided and sinking in with people. Between that and COVID, I just figure it’s safer to be self-sustaining just in case the zombies decide to clear out the store shelves again.

Guess We’re Doing This Again

I’m definitely starting to struggle today. ๐Ÿฅบ Back, shoulder, neck all acting crappy… which I’m sure is in big part due to not having my meds. Despite what I said earlier in the week, I didn’t “just pay” for my WC meds this time. ๐Ÿ˜  I picked up one of them, but I left the other two on hold. I may be able to get my medical insurance to cover one of them, but even with that – right now the friggin’ pharmacy is out of stock. ๐Ÿ˜’ They let me know yesterday morning when I tried to fill it, but I sure would have thought by early evening the next day it would have arrived. Nope. And the final med, the one that’s well over $400… I’m leaving it on hold until I hear back from my lawyer. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I’ve been trying to keep my mind busy though, building a smaller and sleeker camera mount for my 360 camera. ๐Ÿค“๐Ÿ”ง Pretty happy with what I came up with, although I was surprised to learn that my hood is aluminum. ๐Ÿคจ Weird. Glad that at least the roof will hold this magnet mount tight and steady.

Speaking of that magnet… the other day I extended the thick selfie stick that came with the Insta360 One and connected it to the magnet, then tried it on the roof and trunk. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ The resulting footage is just too wobbly though, at least until I figure out how to enable the FlowState Stabilization w/o losing the fixed view. But yeah, I was hoping to do one from the tip of the hood as well, but yeah… magnet no sticky. ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿงฒ

Yesterday and today would have been perfect days for a drive to Millersport, to do a quick run of the town / island to get them covered in 360 degrees, but my back and neck are just too screwed right now. ๐Ÿ˜ฃ๐Ÿฅบ I could do it, it just wouldn’t be comfortable. There’s still time tonight where I could get some calls regarding my meds, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed that I’ll be able to get myself back to my “meh normal” sooner than later. ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

Froggy

Just went out to drag the trash buggy to the road and grab the mail… ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

The camera on this phone is amazing. The lights on the garage are actually just 15w / 100-lumen incandescent bulbs… but they work like floodlights for the IR security cameras that are aimed out front. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Not sure what the iPhone’s trick is for getting such a bright, clear shot – other than it using a three-second exposure. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Handheld, at that… there must be lots of clever image processing to keep it sharp, eh? ๐Ÿค“

A Normal Entry

Figured I better go ahead and make a “normal” entry after barfing out the entry below this one. ๐Ÿ˜ I ordered a neodymium magnet from Amazon and it arrived yesterday. It’s stated function is to tie to the included rope, so you can toss it into lakes, ponds, creeks – and hopefully pull out some magnetic goodies. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ๐Ÿ˜ƒ But since it had a removable hoop screw in the middle of it, that allowed me to replace it with a 1/4″ – 20 – 1 1/2″ screw to serve as a camera mount. ๐Ÿค“๐Ÿ“ท

I’ve been using a similar sized magnetic mount to record the 360 videos, and it seemed like it would still hold at speeds of about 45 mph, but it was one of those old school traditional magnets – and this new one definitely has more staying power than the former. ๐Ÿงฒ But I went ahead semi-permanently attached the “tripod screw” to the flat neodymium disc with the hole in the center, so once the weather breaks all I have to do is give it a quick test to see how much better (or not) it will be. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

It wasn’t something I needed to do, but I just wanted to have something “fun” to mess around with, to help me get my mind off of a bunch of other stuff. ๐Ÿ˜’ And even though I’ve got it assembled how I want now, I did have a few different sized screws as well as a plastic tube that I was considering sanding into a shorter 3″ mount. It’s hard to explain without pics, but right now I attach the 360 camera to the magnet mount while it’s on a heavy duty selfie stick. When that stick is collapsed it’s about 10″ tall, so it does create a decent amount of wind resistance as speeds increase. ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ So the shorter one with less wind resistance was a thought, but for now I’m just gonna go with the easier “magnet with a screw sticking out the top” method. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

You know how it is though… always nice to have some goofy little hobby thing to dick around with. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Where’d That Come From?

I’ve had my current dash cam for probably two years now, and it’s been a great little camera… and then the other day DDPai updated the firmware and app, and it acts like a whole new beast. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I mean, yeah, they’re mostly just cosmetic changes – in both the app and the resulting videos – but still, having some new visual bells and whistles sorta gives you the same feeling you get after having a new spoiler, grill, and splitter installed onto your car. ๐Ÿ˜ It just gives it that “ooh, yay” feeling that typically starts fading away almost immediately after purchasing any type of product. ๐Ÿ˜

Today’s trip in town was not awesome though. ๐Ÿ˜• I had to go to the Liberty Center to drop off my ballot, and then on the way back home I stopped at Dollar General to get some pop and cat supplies. I’m not sure what it was about being out today, but my brain was not happy. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ My breathing even got a little weird when I pulled into the full parking lot, so I got in and out as quickly as possible. I dunno… something about all the maskless people bothered me more than usual today. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ž

I actually had to sit in my car for a few minutes before I left, due to feeling overheated and a little lightheaded. ๐Ÿ˜’ It’s been a while since I’ve had that “panic attack” feeling during a shopping trip – but that’s also because I haven’t done hardly any “shopping trips” this year. ๐Ÿ˜ I guess I’m just a bit rattled since I wasn’t expecting it. But after hurrying home to get back inside my bubble, all seems to be well. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I dunno… the weather is super crappy today due to the rain blowing up from the hurricane that hit Louisiana a couple days ago, so I know that didn’t help. It’s frustrating though. Sitting here, going back over everything around my trip into town… ๐Ÿค” I can’t point out what it was that was so different today than other days. (Which also means I can never predict when it is or isn’t gonna happen.) Meh… not gonna dwell on it. ๐Ÿ™‚ Time to unpack my bags before I get lazy.

360 Degree VR Tour

Here’s a brief example of one of these 360 videos with the settings working like I intend them to. I can’t enable stabilization w/o things getting F’d up, and I’m still not quite sure why, but for this type of application it doesn’t look like the videos will suffer much due to that fact. I didn’t bother centering the camera on the car like I’m doing for my “real” tour videos, but you get the idea…

They should be viewable on phones, computers, and virtual reality headsets – where you can use your fingers, mouse, and head movements (respectively) to look around wherever you want in the scene. I haven’t tested it yet, but hopefully you can still adjust playback speed in case I happened to drive too quickly past something you wanted to see. (Link to YouTube page, if you wanna view it directly in your phone / headset.)

Not gonna get into any more nerdy details at the moment though. A work in progress…
