I think I fell asleep yesterday around 6pm, and other than being woken up a couple times from the thunder and lightning, I slept through the night until a bit before 6am. 😊 Nice to finally get a catch-up night of sleep, since the past week has been rough… 4 or 5 hours a night at best. So as the sun was coming up I decided to take a ride down to Rockbridge to grab a coffee.
While I was getting gas in the car, and older fella walked over to me and asked how I’ve kept my car dry. I said “Ahh, I bet you came from the south, eh?” and pointed out how it wasn’t raining back towards home… but he was driving a dark gray Fusion as well, although his was one design-year earlier than mine. But it was the strangest thing because he sounded like, and had the mannerisms of, my Grandpa Batina. 😯 My brain wasn’t really prepared for human interaction… heh… but in this case I didn’t mind.
I didn’t realize at first why he had chosen me to talk to, but then I saw which car he was driving. But he was telling me how much he loves his car, how he’s never had to do any serious maintenance on it, how he could get from wherever to Marion county on just a quarter tank of gas… heh… just stuff that helped him come across even more like Grandpa than he would have if he was talking about other stuff. 😏
But then I realized why I got his attention. It wasn’t just that my car was dry, but because he was also looking at the nose of the car, with the new grill and splitter… because he told me all that good stuff about his car, and then he said “But lookin’ at this one, I think it’s almost time for an upgrade. This is sharp!” So that was pretty kewl, considering nobody had ever made a comment about my car before like that. I mean, she’s always been a good looking car, but the new bits do make her stand out just a little more now.
I still have to go spray her off here at some point and get a few pictures of the new look, but it was nice that even as-is she’s encouraging at least one person to get a new car. And actually, since Ford has stopped making them, I bet there’s some good deals to be had on the remaining inventory. It’s still crazy to me that Ford’s only production car from here on out will be the Mustang… with all of their other vehicles being trucks, suvs, or crossovers. 😐 Oh, and the grill on his Fusion… good lord… SO much chrome. 😅 And it didn’t look like it could just be swapped out like mine.
Such a weird feeling though… he didn’t look like Grandpa, but driving back to the house I was feeling almost like I just had another conversation with him again. From my memories of his and Grandma’s cars, it feels like he always went for “big and cushy” with the Oldsmobiles and Lincolns. It makes me wonder if in his younger years, if he ever went for something quick and sporty… if there even was such a thing back then.
