Unexpectedly Chill Day

My earlier post from today was actually written last night and just scheduled to post this morning… because I was sleeping in, comfortably in my big ol’ recliner. ๐Ÿ˜Š I’ve had it for quite a while now, so it is starting to lose some of its poof, but it’s still almost perfect for sleeping in. Gawd… what an “old person” thing to say and admit to, but hey, if it works it works, right? ๐Ÿ˜

And for better or worse, after that decent night of sleep and then waking up and getting moving around… I had one of those rare days where I didn’t feel compelled to do a damn thing. I often mentally paint myself into a corner, planning this or that, then being frustrated if I can’t or don’t get to it – but today was just a nice nothin’ type of day. (It’s amazing what a difference “not waking up in pain” can mean for any given day.)

I’m sure I’ll grab my phone this evening and catch up on messages and such, but for the most part I’ve just been trying to absorb some non-twitchy type news, and looking up various other random shit on the laptop. ๐Ÿค“๐Ÿ’ป Local news, weather stuff, SpaceX stuff, concerts over the next few months, looking up apartments out of curiosity, getting caught in the YouTube rabbit hole of course… just random fluff like that.

Every now and then I check all the mapping sites to see if there have been any updates, and I noticed that Google Earth’s imagery of Millersport sure makes it look like they filled in their public pool with dirt – with a large building or house being built right next to it. ๐Ÿ˜ง Might have to see if I can get a closer look in person. It’s sad though… I mean, I didn’t go there a lot as a kid, but I remember that it was one of the few things that could bring out what seemed like half of the town on those hot hot days. And that’s saying something, considering the two beaches that Buckeye Lake still had at that time. (Not only is “Sandy Beach” not a beach anymore, but they un-island’d the island that was right off the shore there. Weird.)

I hope the weather for this weekend is close to how it was today. Yeah, it’s not like I spent much time out in it… but it’s nice to open the doors again to let the breeze blow some stink out of the house, without sweating balls a half hour later. For today, I’ve been quite fine just watching the pretty sky and clouds blow past, either from out of my living room window or via one of the many security cameras that let me peek at various angles around the house.ย  โ˜๏ธย ย ๐ŸŒžย ย ๐Ÿ“น๐Ÿง

The day did have some purpose though. Back’s definitely feeling better than yesterday, didn’t wanna accidentally blow all my energy trying to do something today that can wait until next week, plus I’ve got an early doctor appointment tomorrow that I had forgotten about… so today just felt like the right day to take it a little more easy than usual. ๐Ÿ™‚ Oops, there I go again… worrying about justifying it to myself or whatever. ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ Heh… change takes time… and that’s okay.

I’m Sure Nobody Will Mind

File this one under “Things you can’t do a damn thing about, but we’ll let you think you can.”

I got a letter from the county… actually, I’m assuming everyone did… saying that the mandated property appraisal updates had been completed, along with stating the estimated value of my property from last year, the new estimated value for this year, and then a few dates and locations listed at the bottom for folks that have questions and want to talk to someone about any of it. ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜ Heh… I have a feeling those are gonna be some loud, active meetings if people’s updated values were all in line with what mine was.

Now, I’m not sure when the last updates were, so there are things that could be taken into account in my area that you wouldn’t immediately think of, if it’s been like a decade or so. ๐Ÿค” I live out of town, but close to the south end of the Lancaster bypass. Anyone living within a couple miles of me, we’ve probably all seen legitimate value increases because of the bypass. People who work in Columbus but want (or have) to live around Lancaster… this is probably where you’d wanna be. Because instead of driving through town on the old Rt 33, dealing with traffic, stop lights, etc – you jump on the bypass (at 70 mph) and in just a little more than 10 minutes you’re already in Carroll. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

So if that was part of the consideration, then okay… maybe I can see where y’all are coming from. But hell, wasn’t the bypass completed over ten years ago? I’m too lazy to look it up. But anyway… yeah, somehow, between 2018 and 2019, the value of my property and dwelling – for the purpose of taxation – went up $34,000. ๐Ÿ˜ณย Thirty. Four. Thousand. Dollars.

I’m pretty sure that everyone getting one of these letters had the same mental response as me… thinking, “Umm, would you like to actually come into my house and see what it’s like? Can you show me which aging parts suddenly jumped up in value by tens of thousands of dollars?”ย And yeah, there’s all kinds of “this and that” discounts that get applied before they get down to the actual amount you’re taxed on, so it isn’t quite as bad as it sounds… but still. ๐Ÿ˜• It’s safe to say that people are gonna be pretty shocked across the board, and I bet a lot of them are gonna make sure they are heard, at one or all of those meetings.

And I hope nobody gets one of those letters and sits there pleased, thinking that they can now sell their house for however much more the county claims that it’s worth. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ It’s the opposite of that. Other than normal market fluctuations, this house would fetch the same price this year as it would have last year… and in fact, now that the property taxes will be even higher due to that higher appraisal, it could technically cause it to sell for less. Folks with much newer, nicer, or bigger dwellings than mine, or people who have multiple acres of land rather than the half-acre that I’ve got… whoo… I’d hate to see how much their values changed in the course of this one year. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

I’m not really complaining. I don’t have a whole hell of a lot to bitch about when it comes to how I ended up living here or the responsibilities that come along with it. It’s just sort of a shocking thing to get in the mail somewhat out of the blue. It was probably something that most people knew was coming, and I may have even heard about it myself and just forgot, but until you see the county’s numbers… heh…

Oh C’mon…

Getting a half-way decent night of sleep didn’t do anything to recharge my batteries for any significant use today. Of course I do have a little more on my mind than usual, but that wasn’t what was bothering me today. Actually, I didn’t realize that anything was bothering me today – until it did. Around noon I went outside to use my little air compressor to air up my tires, since that was something I could just do in the driveway without having to drive into town or anything. Figured that was within my ability today.

Spent about ten minutes doing that. It was in the sun, yeah, but it wasn’t like it was actually that hot out. But yeah, so I was just waiting in the normal sun as my slow compressor topped off two of my tires… and when I went back inside, I fell asleep within minutes and didn’t wake up until almost two hours later. So bizarre. I wasn’t tired, wasn’t sleepy, and that’s all that I did… but *ploop*… I was out.

It’s still frustrating, and it still bothers me… but being so close to the end of this phase, at least I can think about it at the end of the day and smirk. It would be terrifying if this was just “how I’m gonna be from now on” but that’s not how it is. But knowing that something so truly small can trigger the “nope” button in my brain, which effectively shuts me down, it’s such a weird thing. Not a fan.

Hoping that I can get one more solid night of sleep under my belt tonight, and that maybe that will be enough to at least avoid any unintentional spontaneous naps tomorrow.

Bubble Doesn’t Always Work

It’s been a rough, rough week… but I’m not even gonna talk about all of it. I don’t want to take the chance of spreading more negative emotions just because it helps me to get things off my chest. Going to bed early tonight. Hoping for a reset of my body and mind. Glad I made it through the week… sadly, the same can’t be said for one of my old friends from school. He was a couple grades ahead of me, so I was actually closer to his little brother. Definitely one of those things where nobody even saw it coming. But yeah, I’m tired of this week… so the sooner I get to sleep, the sooner it will be over and I can try to start fresh.

Happy (late) birthday, Dad…ย  trying to get good enough where I can visit soon. Sorry… that’s all I can say. ๐Ÿ˜ž

What’s This?

Only got a couple hours sleep last night and then still had to wake up at 8am to get ready for my monthly appointment with Dr Walter. ๐Ÿ˜’ I don’t know how he does it, but he always seems to be in a good mood no matter what the time of day. If nothing else, he’s got a great “game face” for when it comes to dealing with patients. ๐Ÿ˜ I told him how my left arm was literally like a limp noodle the day that I came home after my surgery, but how since then I haven’t really had any pain – thanks to the temporarily increased meds.

So it was a good visit, with nothing for me to really complain about. Like I mentioned to him, I think that sometimes the amount of pain that I’m feeling in my shoulder and in my neck is relative. When that’s the only thing that I’ve got to focus on, there’s a good chance I’ll notice it more and feel genuinely worse – but when I’m barely two weeks out from a major surgery, my old injury is the last thing on my mind as long as it’s staying at that moderate level of pain where it’s usually at.

I filled him in about the next steps that I’ll be taking with all of that, and we agreed that next month would probably be better for evaluating any changes, since I’ll have had plenty of time to heal from the surgery. I had to leave there and head directly downstairs to have more blood drawn for a thyroid panel, but I still left in a surprisingly good mood.

It’s weird… I haven’t had much to feel good about in a while, and in a way I still don’t… so having those hints of “good mood” just felt weird, since it then caused me to sit here waiting for something or someone to come along and ruin it. ๐Ÿ˜ž Like Charlie Brown said, “I think I’m afraid to be happy… because whenever I get too happy, something bad always happens.”

But with that little boost of positive energy, I did go ahead and throw the Insta360 One camera out there on a tripod in the front yard, set to time-lapse mode. One frame every five seconds, and I had one lens directly facing the setting sun, with the lens on the other side obviously completely shielded from the sunlight. ๐Ÿ˜Ž I wanted to not only do a time-lapse, but to see how bad the stitching is when there’s such an exposure difference between the two lenses. In practice, it would probably be better to turn the camera 90 degrees, where both lenses would get a similar amount of bright light on them. ๐Ÿคจ

Meh… I’ve gotta recharge the camera before I can hook it up to the phone and export the video, so I’ll just drop it in here later once it’s done. In the mean time I’m gonna get a notepad and start documenting all the medical bill stuff, and try to figure out what I wanna cover at my PCP appointment tomorrow. Oy… too many doctors this week, eh? And it ain’t over yet…
